If you look closely enough, you can just about see me stood in my doorway behind the grate!

Sekei massive...INNIT! Ellen's wonderful artwork and...check out how organised we all are!! The table on the left is who owes who and how much, it's if two of us do the shopping we split it between all of us when we get back. The ticks next to each name (far left) is how many times that person has washed up! And the bottom right table is how many times somebody has payed for something that doesnt cost enough to split between 6 of us; ie. bread, veg, eggs, etc.#

Err...pretty self explanatory I reckon...its just mine and flics room!

Almost come to the end xxx

Eeee...not many of these left before ill be back in England. What am I going to do with all my time?!No more blogs to write and no more getting excited becuase i can use the internet or check the post....u guys have it easy..believe!!

In Nungwi on a proper girls holiday; me, cat and flic at the moment. Last Thursday we (me, cat, flic and rosie) headed off to Lushoto, a very small town up in the mountains in Western Usambara. Although the views were stunning and i am glad i went, it was FREEZING cold and there was very little/nothing to do! It was a nice few days where we just chilled out though, managed to get a walk in up to a german trench that was used in WW1 and then on to a very cute little farm for homemade cheese, bread and jam. We cut it short though because a) we were SHATTERED! 9:30-3:30 non stop was bad enough for me...dont know how u did it cat but hats off 2 u! and b) we wouldnt have been back in time for the England game if we'd carried on! Other than that, we didn't really do that much! Went to the market and had a browse, i bought a new kanga which im going to get made into a dress : )

On Monday morning we got a life down the very narrow and VERY winding road off an overlanders truck and got dropped off in Mombo to take the next bus heading towards Dar. After the palava of trying to fit our bags on the bus, which, at first was the thing that was going to stop us from being allowed on, we all piled on and watched the conductor throwing people out of their seats for us wazungu. (plural of mzungu) We finally arrived in Dar and jumped in a taxi. After taking Rosie to her overnight accomodation and saying bye :( we thought we'd 'head' (just for u Rosie! teeheehee!) over to the ferry port to catch the ferry over to Zanzibar. It was tight for time, and, on arrival at the port we were met by a guy who told us that the ferry was full. All the tickets had been bought by touts and they were selling them for TSH 30,000 when they should have been TSH 17,500. This guy also told us, however, that for only TSH16,000 more, we could fly to Zanzibar; a lot less hassle, a lot less time and a lot more fun! So that we did. We arrived in the airport and after only maybe half an hours waiting, we boarded the plane. Awww! The cutest plane in the world! A little 12 seater, I was sat directly behind the pilot and the views as we flew over the reef and the Indian Ocean were amazing. Definatly worth it methinks. When we arrived in Zanzibar, we got in a taxi and hit the road up to Nungwi, which is where we are now.

When i came to Zanzibar with the rents approximately 3 weeks ago, I thought it was just sods law that it was raining. And when we spoke to our friends who left Zanzibar for Dar at about the same time that we left Dar for Zanzibar, they said the weather had been stunning all week. So, when we woke up on Tuesday morning to grey clouds, i couldn't quite understand what was happening. The sun made an appearance for a little while on Tuesday, and again yesterday. Today, however, we were swamped by a very very large grey cloud which rained on us and kept us off the beach all day. One more day left in Nungwi, Zanzibar, AFRICA and I am in complete shock that its hotter in Rochdale than it where i am. The weather WILL get better because i'll cry if it doesnt!! Had a big night last night, very fun...cocktails on the beach and lots of drinking games with an overland truck we have now met in Arusha, then again in Dar and then again in the same apartments we're at! Off to Stone Town on Saturday where the plan was to watch the film festival but apparantly, it doesnt start till the 16th or something similar. That sucks! So i guess just a spice tour and a lot of wandering around looking at pretty buildings etc. Will update again though before I go back to Arusha.

Love u all tonz and tonz, 10 days!!! Man ,that is SCARY!

Alice In Tanzania

OK, hi everybody!

Again, sorry I havn't updated for a while, although, I see it as a good thing...I'm no longer coming into town EVERY day to check the post in the vain hope that somebody might have sent me something :( or coming to use the internet to check my emails! YEY! And anyhoo, I dont think that many people check this anyway, momma and poppa and kate and, perhaps ruth sometimes...ah well, i'll appreciate it when i get home i guess! Also, apologies for the people who do read my blog that i havn't managed to figure out how to post any photos on it yet, I'm workin on a new site where i may be able to post photos...this blog site is hard work...kinda wished id gone with the same one cat's with now but, again, ah well! You have to make the mistakes to learn from them! Hakuna matata!

It's now the 27th june, despite what my blog site my say it is! Since i last updated, loads of stuff has happened!

I'v now finished teaching, aswell as the after school club (or tuition, as the kids called it!). On the subject of the tuition, me and cat had a good few sessions with them...they got a little tired of the book i fear so we decided we would teach them english by playing games with them and using the good ole technique of listen and learn! Pictionary went down a treat...they knew what 2 do and knew what most of the words were...we had; farm (cats idea...dont think id be able 2 draw a farm!!) but they mostly drew farmer, cockroaches, giraffes! Girls against boys obviously!! We taught them how to play wink murder, which was highly amusing!! We had them all stood up on their benches and cat had chosen both a detective (to stand in the middle) and a murderer. She played it slightly different to how i used to, where nobody knew who the murderer was. This, however, was a little too confusing particularly for me, as i was playing with them and was surrounded by 30 children all blinking at each other and nobody dieing! In the end, cat told me who the murderer was and told the boy to wink at me, which he did and i demonstrated what we were to do. It was a sort of drama exercise aswell, we were trying 2 get them to make the loudest, most dramatic death they could...after all, thats what makes the game so fun! So i did...i screamed as loud as i possibly could and thrw myself onto the floor where i clutched my neck choking! It was one of my personal bests if u ask me...the children didn't agree! I looked up, mid-death only to see half the children running around the classroom like headless chickens wondering what to do, with a look of only what i can describe as pure panic on their faces! oops! hehe! After reassuring them that i was faking and that i wasn't possessed or, in actual fact, dieing (!) we tried to play again where we ALMOST managed to master the game! They mastered the die when somebody blinks at u but they were all still blinking at each other and the detective didnt have a clue what was goin on! It was definatly worth the try though, if just to see their faces when i did my 'death'!

My last day at school was...eventful! Mum and dad came to meet us at the house (more to come about what we got up to together) and we all got to blowing up balloons! By the time we had finished we had a living room full of balloons! I mean, literally, the floor was covered! So we took charlottes mozzie net off her bed (she left it behind!) and put all the balloons in that so we could carry them to my classroom. So me, mum, dad, ellen and flic went to my classroom to start our party. Mama Kavishe had got the kids to put their tables around the edges of the room so there was a big space in the middle. I had lollies from england that the rents had brought out 4 me and the ipod on the speakers (which turned out to be very quiet compared to the noise of 75 VERY excited children!) and just emptied the balloons on the floor...man, it was carnage!! The kids all jumped from the other sides of their tables into the middle of the room and, whilst screaming and cheering, they spent five minutes actually physically fighting over the balloons! One thing iv learnt out here is that children are not taught a) how to share or b) how to be polite (to mzungos at least!) One kid had about 4 in his hand and was fighting this other child with none! Had a game of musical statues with them with me, flic, ellen, mum and dad and mama kavishe as the judges; i think that has to be one of the highlights of this whole trip. they had such a good time (i hope!) and they were so well behaved...then the winners got an extra lolly each. Just before i left i gave them all a pen and a pencil each, said a very quick and very emotional goodbye to them all and left!

Then it was off to ellens class, whos younger than mine...that was even crazier!!! They were screaming and running around the place!! ellens teachers were almost as excited as the kids!! hehe! She had all this party blowy things (cant remember the names) and balloons and those furry things that u can stick 2 your clothes and stuff! She cried bless her!

After that, the last stop was mine and cats party with our after school club. Again, one of the highlights of this trip...playing over-under with balloons with them! We split them up into 4 teams and taught them how to play...they sort of got the drift aswell! cat gave out her sparkly pencils to them and they each got a pen aswell. It was one of the best days iv had since being here, just seeing the kids so excited and pleased and happy made me happy too. After a long and hard 4 months of teaching those kids I finally felt like they were MY class.

That evening we went for a staff 'do' at a local bar;a great end to a great day. Mr Lizer, one of the teachers at sekei gve us a little speach, in swahili (for the teachers) and then in english for us. We had a meal and then a few drinks and then headed off to meet our friends who, those of us who went to Zambia, met in Livingstone....

So the Dar lot, (being Mel, Elly, Craig and Brendan) all of whom are volunteers in Dar es Salaam, (hence the 'Dar' lot!) who had put us up with shelter when we visited Dar in April, came to stay with us for the weekend. We took them out to Masai camp for ellens last night out with us all :( and had a VERY heavy night!! Man, it was heavy! I was off to Kenya for a wedding that i had been invited to the following day so i stayed at my friends house and off we went the next day.
The drive to Kenya ws long but fun and the views of Kili as we were drving through Moshi were AMAZING! I'v never seen it looking so beautiful. When we arrived we got ready and went pretrety musch straight to the wedding. This wedding was in the middle of a national park, surrounded by bushland, Chantal and Pete got married. The wedding was so beautiful, and Chantal looked gorgeous. Then we headed off to the other side of the rock for sundowners. It was all very sophisticated and completely stunning! We went back to the lodge for a big meal, speeches etc and partied till dawn : )

Sunday i arrived home and our house and a few others went out for a meal to say bye to Ellen who left the following day.

On the Monday, i got up and jumped on a plane to Zanzibar to meet mum and dad where we were having a weeks holiday in, what was supposed to be, the sun! Although it rained for the first day, we managed to fit a spice tour in stone town in and the weather was awesome for the following 3 days so we did snorkelling and dolphin swimming (!) with dolphins in the wild..it was perfect. Ma and Pa went home on the Sunday, we all flew back to KIA (Kilimanjaro International Airport) which is where i said goodbye to them..It was so nice to see them and im glad they came out. It was nice to see familiar faces from back home so thanx rents : )

Since I got back i havnt really done anything interesting. Went to watch the rugby on saturday, Tanzania vs Uganda...21-8 up at half time and they lost 23-21 : ( it was a very close match and enjoyable to watch aswell. It was a heavy night after that but i think i must have eat something funny on friday night becuase i kept being sick so i went home early : (

Anyway, I have finally come to the end of this very long blog! Tomorrow me, cat, rosie and flic are off on holiday for two weeks; Usambara mountains first then Zanzibar (yes, again!) for a week. On our way through Dar to Zanzibar we'll be dropping Rosie off to go home : ( and us 3 will head on. Nungwi first then Stone Town for the Internationl Film Festival of the Dhow countries for a couple of days. Then back to Dar to drop Cat off, and from there just me and flic, the lonesome two will head back to Arusha. I only have three days left here before I have to head back to Dar (again!) and jump on a plane...to England. so...the 16th july. Book it in your diaries folks. Man im gonna miss this place. Me and Justin and whoever i can muster up who fancies it are coming back here this time next year. Jutins gonna organise it, he has land in the masai land so we can stay there and his mum owns a holiday inn out here. I cant wait already and i havnt even left yet!! Will update maybe once or twice if i can whilst im away.

up to date...eventually!!!

OK, im really sorry to everybody who actually checks this site regularly, i am so poo and get caught up on websites like this: http://n.ethz.ch/student/mkos/pinguin.swf and chatting on msn (mostly to people who i saw yesterday or who are sat about 3 computers down from me) I cant help it and then remember that i havnt updated my blogsite. So now i have got round to it, I am almost copying Cat's blog becuase, obviously, most of the things that happen to her, happen to me too! So if you have read Cat's blog, you dont really need to read this!

Just quickly...we recently waitressed/shootered at the rugby ball, where the theme was the letter 'P'. As Cat said we were all dressed as policewomen/policemen (martyn and dave!)...i was officer walice (bit of a long story but, as there is two alice's with changing worlds, im walice for alice w and other alice is malice for alice m!) i was put on bar duty for a while but we all kinda swopped round and took it turns so i had the syringes for a bit (about 20 plastic syringes on a belt filled up with red zappa, blue zappa, or springbock) and i was also in charge of my very own water pistsol which was filled up with sprinkbock! It was a brilliant night...some of the costumes were amazing!! Lots of priests, prostitutes (they were mostly guys!) and pirates.

As Cat said, we have a new edition to the 'sekei massive' as ellen calls it; Rosie. She moved from Enaboiushu which is our neigbouring school, she wasnt really doing much at the school and felt she would enjoy herself more with us. Seems we are a very wanted group!! She stays in Ellen's room which was with Ellen, but Ellen has now gone off to Zanzibar with Pat (her boyfriend), no worries though, she'll be back in two weeks for a few more weeks.Charlotte, however, has gone! Gone gone gone!! She's in Zanizbar at the moment with her boyfriend (possibly fiance by the time they get home??? who knows!!) and then they are flying home together on the 28th May
: ( two down 5 more to go! It's funny to think that Adele is at home. She txt the other day...Delly, if ur reading this...we miss you! Come back!

Me and Cat are now working on these after school English sessions, three times a week where we are currently reading Fantastic Mr Fox by Roald Dahl with them.

I had a bit of a fright last week when i was in absolute agony and cat and rosie had to take me to AAR (the doctors/hospital we were recommended). Apparantly i had a kidney infection...didnt know they hurt when u breathed! The AAR is also renowned for not being very reliable, but, the medication they gave me worked and surely thats all that matters?! So here i am, all better now!!

Friday night we went out to Masai camp for Natasha's birthday and to say bye to the AV volunteers, first time i'd been anywhere all week and my bloody phone got stolen!! So...a little plea to everybody, if i had your phone number previously, can you email me your phone numbers with your names please?! TA!! : )

Anyhoo, best be off, trying to shut the patisserie around me!! : S Sun is back thank god, with any luck, that was the last of the rain!!

Love u all tonz and tonz and tonz,

breathtaking holiday and Dar

Hi everybody...so sorry iv been being so poo and not keeping up with ANYTHING!!! :S The week after safari we didnt really do that much....we had the monday off for bank holiday so we all headed down into town to go the Rwandan Crime Tribunal. After much persuasion, we managed to get the guard to let us in in 'slippers' (flip flops!!!) and headed to the court room where the priest is on trial...this guy apparantly ordered for his church to be bulldozed with 2000 people in it, which it was and then, when people ran out from the rubble, he stood on a balcony gunning them down..there are lots of witnesses and his defence is that god told him to!!!! Craziness!!
OK, so we hit easter holidays and had arranged to go to Pangani with the rugby guys to stay in one of their private beach houses...Pangani is a beautiful sea side resort with amazingly white beaches and hot weather!! We were only going there for the weekend though and then me, cat, martyn and flic were heading off to Dar es Salaam to stay with some people that we met in Zambia who are volunteering there too. Pangani was as we had been told it would be...absolutely beautiful. On Easter Sunday we went off on a little dhow trip where the boys did some fishing (consequently catching....nothing!) and we visited a little island called sand island. We all jumped out before we got to the island and snorkelled for a bit...saw lots of little zebra fishy things and some 'dori's (see finding nemo) then jumped back on the boat to be taken to the island itself. When we reached it, there was almost nothing left of it! It was almost completely submerged in the water so we had fun on it until there was actually nothing left of it and made our way back.

Dar was HOT! We managed to stumble across a subway on our first day which was VERY lucky so in we popped...it was nice to have a foot long and crisps and fanta AND cookies!! :) yey!! That evening we found a very local little bar and popped in to watch the footy, what with being with martyn and craig and brendan..all HUGE footy fans, we couldnt really say no! The next day we trekked all around town lookin 4 somewhere 2 change my travellers cheques....how come all the beaurea de change's in Arusha change travellers cheques but NOWHERE in Dar will?! craziness! We ended up popping into the massive very posh hotel to see if i could change them there...it turned out..i could!!! we sat ourselves down and soaked in the posh-ness (is that a word?!) of the hotel...bought ourselves quiche and a doughnut and sat down! as we were about to leave cat gave our seats away to two men who, after we had finished talking to them, we discovered was the lead singer of the jazz band that plays in the bar there and the Libyan ambassador! They, along with the hotel manager who joined the conversation late, invited us to join them for a drink on Thursday night which we promptly agreed to...of course! That afternoon we hopped in a taxi and went to the water park. 'Kunduchi wet 'n' wild' I think it's called. When we arrived there was NOBODY there!! For a moment we thought the park was shut but then we saw a little family of four playing and we realised it was because it was a week day and the easter holidays in Dar had started a week earlier and, therefore, finished a week earlier than us so everybody was back at work/school. We had to ask for the water slides to be turned on; a bit of a pain really cos we just wanted to run around the park and go on whatever we wanted but kinda cool...the park was so empty that they didn't even have the water slides turned on! Got lots of photos of cheesy poses etc. and pretty much got to do whatever we wanted! Found a very cute little birdy who was being attacked by the crows and saved it, it was very stubborn athough, didn't really want to be saved so we let it go in a saffe, sheltered place. Went to watch the footy again that night...honestly, boys!!!!

On Thursday afternoon the 'Dar' crew went off to school as they had been doing all week and, for some reason, we all slept in till very late. I was the first to wake up, (!!! that should be a whole blog post in itself...yes, i woke up before three other people!) went outside to the toilet and, to my dismay, had to come back inside because i couldn't even walk acrossthe yard to the bathroom! The sun was beaming down and it was uncomfortably hot. By the time I'd finished hopping around and whinging because of the heat, i went back in side and the rest had woken up. Me and Flic came to the conclusion that it was way too hot to do anything at all and that our only option was to stay indoors and sit under the fans they have on the ceiling. However, the electricity cut out so we decided we would go and sunbath outside in the yard but, under no circumstances, were we going anywhere in that heat. It was bad enough lieing down in it, never mind walking around! Cat and Martyn, however, said that they needed to go into town so off they went, walking out of the house, to mine and Flic's smug sniggers : ) That evening off we went to the Movenpick (the hotel mentioned above) as promised. We stopped via subway so we could fill up our stomachs and do our hair and make up as the electricity had cut out at the house! Anyhoo, we arrived at the hotel and, before long, we had clocked the 'rich men' and been invited to sit with them. So we all went over; me, martyn, flic and cat and sat down to chat with them. The jazz band were brilliant, really good and everytime we just mentioned between us "oh, i wonder if he's going to play this song...i love that song" next thing we know the manager has asked the band and they'r playing the song we were jsut discussing! We had the full VIP treatment, which was nice. A few (!!) drinks later and me getting up with the jazz band to sing summertime and we decided it was time to go. A very very good night though with results of possible free nights at the movenpick when we are flying home from Dar!!!

Me and Flic went home the next day, Martyn and Cat stayed to experience the Dar nightlife which, apparantly was very good. Me and Flic went to a party at the AS house (African safari, aka Brad and Geoff's house) for Mike's birthday and celebration of winning the rugby cup. Dont think anything that significant happened that night...cant remember and, as cat wasn't there, i cant copy it off her blog...dammit!!!

Adele's last weekend night on the saturday so we went for a meal with her and her mum. Cat didn't make it, though, her and martyn got stuck on the coach which broke down about a bgillion times (See cat's blog) ...hahahaha!!! Was a good night though, and off we went to masai camp and colobus afterwards.

Safari madness!

O.K, first of all, I'm sooooo sorry about the scatiness of my blog-updating!! I'v just been so busy in the last two weeks that iv struggled to keep update!! Bit here goes, I'm just warning u, its goin 2 b a long one!!

Friday 31st March, went on Safari. We got picked up at about 6:30am by this really cool guy called musa! he then took us all down to the mt.meru hotel to meet the rest of the houses. We then set off to the Lake Manyara National Park. This was our first day of game viewing and my god the animals were all over the place!!! We saw loads of elephants, babboons, zebras, giraffes, hippos and impala and we saw a mini warthog family!! That night we stayed in a lodge in the hills with a BEAUTIFUL view of the lake. We had our dinner and then got evening entertainment aswell!! I bought a kanga (a piece of material that is worn as a skirt but can be made into pretty much whatever you want) its lovely, havnt had it cut yet cos im not quite sure what i want to do with it!

The next night we went off to the serengeti. To do this we had to drive through the Ngorogoro crater but we didn't actually go down into it. After driving for about half an hour around the rim of the crater, our driver had a phone call to say that one of the cars had broken down! A lot of messing around and waiting later, we were driven to the wildlife lodge inside the National park to wait for the other truck to be picked up, towed, and taken to the garage to be fixed. We were all sat in the lodge and looking at the views off the balcony when Kerry decided to teach us a game that she learnt at uni...its the BEST game ever!!!! Its called mafia and involves pretending to be in the mafia and the rest of the peopl having to work out who is in the mafia!! That passed the time quite well so, eventually, when we decided to all split up and have an extra two people in each car, we set off back towards the serengeti. As it was late, we didn't really have a chance to see much...we had our first lion spotting from which we saw quite a few lions after that!! That night we spent the night in a tented lodge just outside the serengeti. As we pulled up the sun was setting over the serengeti....amazing is all i can say!

The third day was spent in the serengeti and, although we didn't see very much, we did see a leopard!! It was just lounging around in the 'V' of a tree not too far away from the road. I didnt get a photograph cos my camera is poo but, luckily, cat has a camcorder with some ridiculous amount of zoom on it so we got some good footage on that (into which were going to make both a safari dvd and a 'africa' dvd!) also, flic got some really good pics too! Other than that we didn't really see much that was that interesting...we saw some gay giraffes (!!) and loads more dikdiks/impalas/deer-esque animals. After lots of driving and not much game viewing, we headed off back to our accomodation for the night...we were staying in the serengeti wildlife lodfe. It was beautiful. When we arrived we were given hot towels and some fruit juice, then we were briefed about when breakfast and dinner is served. We went to our rooms and then went to the garden bit through the resteraunt for the outside bar to watch the sunset whilst enjoying the luxuries of happy hour!!

The fourth day we headed to the crater where we were going to spend our last day. As the Serengeti is so vast it took us the whole day to get to the Ngorogoro so we did a bit of viewing on the way. We saw more lions and what looked like every single wildebeest on the PLANET migrating! There were THOUSANDS of them!! That evening we arrived at the Ngorogor wildlife lodge. The views from all the windows and, in particular the balcony that came offf the restaruant/lounge area were absolutli breathtaking. And the food was also fit for a king (or a queen...which i am..of course!!)

On our last day we went down into the crater. As there are only a limited number of cars allowed in to the crater, we were only allowed 6 hours down there but, by the end of our six hours, we had seen all 5/6 of the big 5!!! Elephants, buffalos, rhinos (from a distance!!), lions, cheetah (crossing the road right in front of us!!) and leopard! Apparantly, according to everyone else (including cat which must make it true!) if u see either leopard or cheetah it counts!

Wow, Thursday=birthday celebrations! Was worried that nobody would be able to come cos so many people went away yesterday but it was packed!! Met everybody at masai....cant even begin to explain the night! It was good, thats all i can say!!! I have photos to jog everybody's memories!

Just wanted to say, before i go, thank u soooo much 2 people who sent me things! It's always nice 2 get post especially when u know the people who sent the stuff went a long way 2 do so! It made my day...

there....up to date!!!!

Miss u alll tonz and love u lots, next update in about a week probably, very quiet week this week!
